Kigali Christian School

This school is incredible. It is still growing, which is why we helped build a secondary school for them, so that they could add more and more grades each year it is open! It's mission statement is to breed educated Christian leaders for the community of Rwanda by allowing these children to get the best education from well qualified Christian Rwandan teachers. The school is now only operating on English, as opposed to French the last few years. So all the teachers are in English class after school because they have to teach in English, when last year they taught in French! How patient are they! I for one might throw in the towel if I was told I would have to learn a whole new language in order to keep my job. Yikes! But the teachers all understand that if they are to breed Christian missionaries, then English is a great language to teach since it is becoming the most universal of languages. I was surprised at how well many people I met spoke English. I got around well not knowing French or Kenya-Rwandan at all.

While I worked on the construction cite, there were times when I would finish the tasks I was comfortable with, and be left with nothing to do! There were so many people working and I really had limited knowledge in construction, so I spent a lot of time hanging out with the teachers! Their school year starts in January, so I was there the week before school started and all the teachers were in preparation mode. I was able to talk with the current art teacher and give him some ideas of art projects to do with students having limited supplies. He had mentioned he had only practiced drawing with students since he only had knowledge of them having pencils and paper as their supplies. I gave him some lesson plans and referred him to some websites that would be helpful to come up with fun projects.

Along with the Pre-K through 7th grade school, Youth For Christ also has a Discipleship and Leadership Training for young adults, ages 18-22. This school's purpose is to train missionaries to send out to preach the Good News all over the world! This training is taking place on the same campus as the Kigali Christian School. I would walk past their single classroom and hear all 20-30 of them singing praises to God or they would be outside reading their Bibles and praying. Such an amazing thing to see happening across the globe. I am so encouraged that even on the other side of the world, Christians are dedicating their life to serving God through direct ministry.
